Heaven is a Berlin beer garden in Summer

Berlin boasts a thriving beer scene that's a must-explore for beer enthusiasts looking to settle down on a bench with some friends beneath the trees. From traditional beer gardens known only to locals to sprawling beer gardens in the middle of town, this article has it all.

So, to make it easy for all you beer lovers who can’t wait to explore German beer in Berlin, I’ve split this article into three sections for you:

Find Berlin’s Best Beer Gardens on this map

Discover Berlin's Best Beer Gardens

Welcome to Berlin’s most popular beer gardens! All of the beer gardens in this section are easily accessible from the centre of town. If you’re mixing sightseeing and want to cool off with a German beer in the shade, these Berlin beer gardens are for you.

Prater Garten

As Berlin's oldest beer garden, located in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, Prater Garten is a historical gem where beer has been served since 1837. Even with room for 600, this beer garden gets busy! Still, there are fewer places I’d rather be than in the shade of Prater’s impressive chestnut trees. Don't miss their house-brewed Prater Pils, and make sure to chomp on a pretzel while you’re at it!

Café am Neuen See

Situated in the picturesque Tiergarten, Café am Neuen See offers a scenic view of the Spree, making it an ideal spot for enjoying a Radler on a sunny day. This beer garden serves a variety of German beer and is known for its Bavarian cuisine. It’s a slice of tranquility in the bustling city.

Schleusenkrug

Nestled between Tiergarten park and the Zoological Garden, Schleusenkrug combines lush greenery with a delightful beer selection. This beer garden is a haven for those looking to relax after a day of exploring Berlin.

BrewDog Dogtap Berlin

For the craft beer aficionados, BrewDog Dogtap Berlin brings a slice of the craft beer revolution to Berlin with its eclectic selection. Located pretty far south in a historic building, this beer garden gives a modern twist on the traditional German beer garden experience. It’s absolutely worth the journey.

Golgatha Biergarten

Tucked away in Viktoriapark, Golgatha Biergarten is a true locals’ favourite. It's known for its vibrant atmosphere and excellent BBQ-style grilled sausages. They serve a variety of German beers, but my favourite is the Kellerbier.

BRLO Brwhouse

BRLO Brwhouse in Kreuzberg is at the forefront of the craft beer movement in Berlin. Their innovative beers, brewed with passion and precision, are a must-try for any beer enthusiast. There are more than 20 on tap, so settle in.

Birgit

Combining a club atmosphere with a beer garden, Birgit (formerly Birgit und Beer) in Kreuzberg is where Berlin's nightlife meets its beer culture. Sip on German beers and hear the thud, thud, thud of Berlin’s infamous techno clubs around you.

Zollpackhof Biergarten

Zollpackhof Biergarten in Mitte is a stone's throw from the main attractions, offering a peaceful retreat from all of that sightseeing! They offer a range of food from snacks to full, hearty meals, and importantly, they sell 1-litre (double size) beers. You know, just in case you’re really thirsty!

Frannz-Club

In the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, Frannz-Club hosts concerts and other events, but its beer garden out the back oozes charm, and is situated in what was once, before WWII, one of the largest breweries in Berlin.

Pfefferbräu

Pfefferbräu is perhaps home to the prettiest terrace in Berlin. Despite being close to a main road, the beautiful, elevated position is a must-visit for those exploring Prenzlauer Berg.

Mauersegler

Located near Mauerpark, Mauersegler is a bustling beer garden that captures the spirit of Berlin with a great atmosphere, and dedication to showing football on their many, many screens.

The Locals' Favourite Berlin Beer Gardens

A little ways out of the centre if where you’re going to find the true Berliners flocking to the benches, queues and beers in the Summertime. Blend in with the Berliners at these fine beer gardens.

Baergarten at Revier Südost

The newest Berlin beer garden on this list! You’ll find the Art & Culture Baergarten down in Schöneweide. I think of Baergarten as a bridge between beer gardens and Berlin’s wild & unique club scene. Check their website for upcoming live music events. It's a modern take on the traditional beer garden, with a mostly younger crowd.

Platzhirsch

Despite bad Google reviews, I really like Platzhirsch. Though, I’ve never eaten there. You’ll find it right outside the stunning Rathaus Schöneberg U-Bahn Station - probably the most beautiful station in Berlin - next to the place where JFK gave his (in)famous “Ick bin ein Berliner” speech in 1963. Sat beneath the trees with the sound of the fountain behind you, surrounded by chill locals playing boule, it’s a pretty idyllic place to while away the hours.

Brauhaus Berlin Spandau

For a taste of traditional German beer in a historic setting, Brauhaus Berlin Spandau is unmatched. Enjoy their home-distilled beers in the heart of Spandau's old town, picturesque location that’s rarely visited.

Brauhaus Südstern

Brauhaus Südstern in Kreuzberg is known for its house-brewed beers, and has the honour of being among the first microbreweries in Berlin. The brewpub's intimate beer garden, backing onto the Hasenheide park, is a favourite among Kreuzberg & Neukölln locals.

Eschenbräu

Located in Wedding, Eschenbräu stands out for allowing guests to bring their own picnic. Their house-brewed beers are the star of the show, offering a true taste of German craftsmanship. Make sure to check out their excellent apple juice, and don’t be surprised when they tell everyone to clear out at 10pm! The neighbours don’t like the noise…

Jagdhaus Spandau

For those willing to venture right to the edge Berlin, Jagdhaus on the Havel river promises a traditional Bavarian beer garden experience with hearty meals and excellent beer. If you’re the adventuring type, it’s on the 100-mile (160km) Berlin Wall trail. You can find all the remaining pieces of the Berlin Wall here.

Klunkerkranich

Klunkerkranich in Neukölln offers panoramic views of Berlin from its rooftop setting. Want a beer garden with view? Then head up to Klunkerkranich. It can be tricky to find though, you have to go into the shopping centre, take to lift to the 5th floor, and then walk up the ramp to the 6th.

Berliner Berg Brauerei

Berliner Berg Brauerei in Treptow is a modern, local craft beer brewery-meets-beer-garden experience. The perfect place to go for ‘just one drink’ and stumble home after later after making several new friends.

Weihenstephaner Lichterfelde

Weihenstephaner Lichterfelde offers a slice of Bavaria in Berlin, with its selection of Bavarian beers and snacks. Despite a spot right next to the railway, the Weihenstephaner team, who represent Germany’s oldest brewery, have done a great job of making a cosy space outside and in.

Alte Turnhalle

Alte Turnhalle is a charming escape nestled in the Berlin-Friedrichshain neighbourhood. This historic spot, once a gymnasium, has been transformed into a cozy retreat where friends gather for a cold German beer and a good time. The menu’s not bad, either! I usually go for the burger.

Urban Spree

Urban Spree, located in the heart of Friedrichshain's RAW cultural complex, is a creative space where the arts and beers flow freely. This vibrant beer garden is an urban oasis for street art lovers and beer enthusiasts alike, offering a selection German and international beers amidst an ever-changing backdrop of graffiti and art installations. It’s the only place in the world I know where you can drink beer, get a tattoo, and order a pizza named after a Slayer album at the same time.

James June

James June offers a contemporary twist on the traditional beer garden experience. You’ll find it amongst the stunning “Wedding Cake” style architecture of Karl-Marx-Allee. This beer garden spot combines rustic charm with a casual, friendly atmosphere. Down to earth, and with a great menu (get the burger!), James June is centrally located, and a lot fun.

Bonus: I saw England beat Germany here in the 2021 Euros and it’s one of my happiest memories.

Despite my face, I was actually having a nice time at the Rübezahl

Berlin Beer Gardens by Lakes and Rivers

You’re going to have to have travel a little further to reach the very best of Berlin’s (and Potsdam’s!) beer gardens, but the journey is worth it. This is truly how the locals in Berlin like to enjoy their beer gardens!

Fischerhütte am Schlachtensee

Fischerhütte am Schlachtensee is beside Berlin’s most beautiful beautiful lake, offering a picturesque setting for sipping on a classic German beer. The serene ambiance makes it a perfect getaway within the city. It’s quite a walk from the Schlachtensee station, but you’ll have plenty of time to rest up and enjoy a few drinks while taking in the stunning view after the hard work!

Rübezahl am Müggelsee

Rübezahl, the treasure on the shores of Müggelsee, Berlin's largest lake. Come here for a serene beer garden experience. Expect a family-friendly environment, stunning lakeside views, fresh fish, fries, ice cream, and of course: German beer.

You’ll have to make a day of this one, so consider arriving here on a boat trip, or hiking up to the Müggelturm for the best view over the lake and into town.

Loretta am Wannsee

This is potentially closed for good, will update come Summertime

Loretta am Wannsee offers stunning views over the Wannsee lake, making it an idyllic spot for enjoying German beer. Their menu of beer garden classics, including sausages, currywurst, fries and salads, complements the wide selection of beers on tap.

Fisch Borke

Fisch Borke brings the maritime spirit to the Müggelsee lake area with its unique combination of a traditional beer garden and a focus on seafood. A fair bit out the way, this is the perfect spot for people cycling around or sailing across the Müggelsee. Fisch Borke beer garden offers fish dishes alongside a refreshing beer selection. I like to pull up a deck chair and enjoy a Radler when I come by on my bike rides with my partner.

Neu Helgoland

When you get to Neu Helgoland you won’t feel like you’re in Berlin anymore. Whether you're arriving by boat or by foot, expect scenic views, delicious beers, and hearty German fare as you sit back and watch locals sail past on their boats.

Milchhäuschen

Next to the lake that gives the Weissensee district its name, Milchhäuschen is technically not a beer garden, but the terrace on the water outside the stylish 1970s GDR-era architecture is just as good a setting for beer as it is coffee or cake.

Did you know? Weissensee is also the name of a TV series set in the same Berlin district.

Wartmanns Café

Technically in Potsdam, but right on the edge, Wartmanns Café is one of those real hidden gems. Located in what used to be an East German exclave hemmed in by the Berlin inside West Berlin, accessible only by bridge, Wartmanns is now open for all. Great sausage, better ice cream, and of course, great German beer. We actually stop here on my Cold War & Nature Bike Tour.

Meierei Potsdam

Nestled in the lush greenery of the Neuer Garten royal park & UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Meierei stands out with its picturesque setting by the tranquil waters of the Havel river. This beer garden is not only about the scenic views; it's also about the love of beer; brewed on site to perfection in the former royal dairy. Spend a sunny afternoon here after visiting the Cecilienhof Palace.

Zenner

Zenner in Treptower Park is a historic beer garden, very popular back in the East German days when it benefitted from large crowds at the huge Soviet War Memorial nearby. These days it’s much more modern. Its excellent location with views over the river Spree means it often fills up, and they often host live music and other special events. A real gem, beloved by locals.

Inselgarten

My personal favourite out of the 30+ Berlin beer gardens on this list! Inselgarten is situated on its own little island in the middle of the river Spree. Expect Czech beers (shock! I know!), sun, sand, a truly relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. I really did save the best until last!
