Three top German food restaurants in Berlin

It may not be world-famous like Italian or French cuisines, but a good, hearty German dish will leave you filled up and more than happy, I promise you.

Here I am with a goulash, käsespätzle, and wheat beer at my favourite restaurant, Heuberger

1. Heuberger

My favourite German restaurant. You’ll find Heuberger in Schöneberg, next to the Julius-Leber-Brücke station on the S1 S-Bahn line. It’s lovely both outdoors and in! My favourite meat dish is the mouth-watering Schnitzel with fried potatoes, but my all-time favourite dish, and the reason I come here is for the vegetarian option, Käsespätzle - Germany’s answer to Mac & Cheese (you’ll love it, trust me).

This is where I take my family when they come to visit me!

2. Maximilians

Just a stone’s throw from Checkpoint Charlie, Maximilians is the perfect way to fill up while you’re exploring the centre of Berlin. Go full Berlin-traditional with the schweinshaxe, the infamous “pork knuckle”. Just expect to roll home after. Bear in mind this is a Bavarian restaurant, so expect to see lederhosen and giant beers.

This is the perfect spot to visit after a classic Berlin sightseeing tour with me!

3. Max und Moritz

The home of true traditional Berlin food. The fixtures and fittings feel like they’ve been here forever, and I’d say Max und Moritz has the best atmosphere of the three restaurants on this list.

Try the Königsberger Klopse, great big meatballs served with a cream sauce and potatoes. Max und Moritz is in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg. A great start to a night out visiting the district’s famous bars and clubs. The menu at Max und Moritz is really unique, so dive in and enjoy.
